Another great idea for a tablescape is to do a cluster of three arrangements at different heights like we did with this table. One consisted of all oriental lilies, one was all white hydrangeas, and the last one was of all white roses.

I thought I would show a little sneak peak of the feature Arkansas Bride magazine is doing on us for their fall issue.

We named this bouquet Sweet Serenity because of the soothing green and white palette. This is a large European hand tie bouquet made of hydrangea, hyacinth, ranunculus, tulips, cymbidium orchids, sweet pea, lotus pod and succulents. This bouquet was wrapped in lime green and cocoa brown double face satin ribbon. Designed by Chelle Gearhardt, AMF and Patricia Upshaw, AMF This boutonniere is made up of a green cymbidium orchid, lotus pod and succluents encased with green bouillon wire. We called this large European hand tie bouquet Rustic Chic. We are gearing up for the annual Kiss a Pig Gala Event at John Q Hammons Center in Rogers, AR! This year's theme is "Mask-Squeal-Rade" so we are using black feathers with their signature red gerbera daisies as the focal point.

The American Diabetes Association holds its annual "Kiss a Pig" Gala to raise awareness and support for diabetes research in Northwest Arkansas. The formal event hosts approximately 1000 guests for an evening of dinner, entertainment, and dancing. The event, which raises over $250,000 annually, holds one of the largest silent and live auction including artwork, vacation packages, autographed memorabilia, event tickets, and gift packages. The event welcomes local business and community leaders to compete in a seven week fundraising contest. In return, the top fundraiser earns the privilege of kissing a live pig at the gala to show appreciation for the animal's heroic role in diabetes research as the first source of insulin.All proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Association of Northwest Arkansas in our work to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all children and adults affected by type 1, type 2, gestational, and pre-diabetes.

The Ladies Auxiliary for the Boys and Girls Club of Benton County was last night at the Embassy Suites John Q Hammons Center in Rogers Arkansas. We were so excited to sponsor the fundraiser event this year which raises several different funds for the backpack program, scholarship program, Thanksgiving food drive, as well as club improvements for the Boys and Girls Club. We at Shirley's decorated the tables with white hydrangeas, white carnations, white roses, italian ruscus, salal/lemon leaf and lily grass tinted silver to match the silver pilsners they were arranged in. It's always so nice to kick off the new year with such a great cause for our Northwest Arkansas area!

They celebrated the launch at a local favorite restaurant Basil's Cafe where we decoracted the tables with specifically designed centerpieces to match Halle Berry's exquisite and elegant taste. Arghhhh...This year's Charity Challenge of the Champions theme was "Tropical Pirate" and we just couldn't wait to show off our official pirate skeleton (which was officially named Jolly). The Color of Hope Charity Gala benefiting Arkansas Children's Hospital was this Friday Night at the Emabssy Suites in Rogers, AR. ve noticed that what I love most about my job is something that an average person usually hates. What is that, you wonder? It’s diversity, change, constant evolution and sometimes even chaos. The day in the life of a florist is anything but boring or mundane. I’ll bet if you asked someone what they thought it would be like to be a florist for the day, most would answer with cliché. The most common one I’ve heard over the years is “It must be fun to play with flowers all day”. Play? Who said anything about playing. Last time I looked it was my job to be a florist, not my hobby. Another personal favorite is “It must be so calm and relaxing being surrounded by all the flowers”. Ok, anyone that says this has not been standing knee deep in floral debris with a pile of orders in front of them to be designed, with a delivery driver rushing you to hurry up, and all 6 of the phone lines are ringing at once. Ah… stress is holding me together! What would I do without it? Is it always that hectic at a flower shop? Of course not, but the truth is that most people never experience that side of our industry. The day in the life of a florist is much more complex that anyone would imagine. There are flowers and supplies to be ordered, windows and coolers to be cleaned, balloons to be inflated, flowers to be prepped and arranged, plants to be watered, payroll, bills and taxes to be paid not to mention invoicing along with credit and collections. Orders and customers don’t just fall in our lap. There are marketing and advertising dollars to be spent wisely, websites to be updated, bridal consultations and proposals to be typed, phones to be answered and the list goes on. Now, down to basics. There are certain tasks that get done day in and day out at a flower shop. First thing in the morning the flowers arrive, fresh from the wholesaler. That’s when the floral fun begins. Boxes and boxes of fresh flowers from all over the world are delivered to our door. Lots of buckets of fresh water are lined up as flowers are unpacked and inspected. A quick cut on the chopper and the flowers are placed into water for hydrating. I love this part seeing all the flowers lined up waiting to take their place in the cooler!! Processing of fresh flowers happens everyday at my shop and it’s a revolving door of flowers in and out. Now we get to the fun part - flowers are artfully arranged in pretty containers of all shapes and sizes. Foliage, accent and focal flowers combined in various ways and then very carefully loaded onto one of delivery vans for a quick trip directly to the recipient! There’s nothing like receiving flowers, hand delivered by a driver. I don’t get to do it often but I still love delivering flowers. It’s fun to see peoples reaction! “Why send flowers?” you may wonder. Flowers create memories. They attack all the senses at once. Color, fragrance and sentiment on a card. I’ve been in the business so long that sometimes it’s hard to think like a consumer or even a recipient of flowers. Back at the shop, the fun continues as the designer hands are flying, support staff sweep up and the sales staff assist customers who need floral advice. Flowers in and out, phones ringing, computers spitting out orders and brooms constantly moving. Ah, the signs of successful flower shop! What I love most about my days in the flower shop are the things that most people probably would avoid. No two days are ever the same. I never know what the day will hold. Maybe an old friend from high school will walk through my doors and ask me to do her wedding flowers or maybe Ross Perot will call or a The Rock will stop byl with a flower order. Sound crazy? Those things have happened to me and will continue to happen!It’s what I love, the diversity of each day! The Life of a Florist - it’s not always a bed of roses but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

MFA Executive Vice President Rod Crittenden, Jerome Raksa, Jo Buttram, 2009 NAFA Designer of the Year contest chairperson, and Tom Butler.

Jerome Raska, AAF, AIFD, CAFA, MCF, PFCI, co-owner of Blumz by JRDesigns in Detroit / Ferndale, MI, was awarded the designer of the Year. Second runner up went to Kay Schlaefli representing Arkansas State Floral Association. Third runner up went to Fran Davis representing the Ozark Floral Association. Congratulations to all the designers!

Shirley’s Flowers had four designers in the competition. Trish Upshaw, AMF, Chelle Gearhardt, AMF, Maria Tapia, and Veronica Guzman. The categories consisted of a sympathy, wedding, theme piece, and the Top 5 have a design off competition which took place on stage.

I am so proud to say Shirley’s had 3 designers place in all categories!

Veronica received 2nd place in Sympathy, 2nd place in the Top 5 design off, and 2nd place overall! Way to go Veronica!!!

Maria received 1st place in the Top 5 design and 3rd place overall! Way to go Maria!!!

Trish Upshaw was a strong competitor within this competition. She received 1st place in sympathy, 1st place in wedding, 1st place in theme piece, and 1st place overall! We couldn’t be more proud of you Trish!!!

Arkansas State Scholarship Competition

The annual Arkansas State Convention held their annual Scholarship Competition where we had four designers competing Trish Upshaw, AMF (Arkansas Master Florist) Maria Tapia, Veronica Merino, and Haroldine Neatherry. They designed in three categories: bridal bouquet, corsage, and sympathy arrangement.

We are ECSTATIC to say Trish Upshaw, AMF was the winner out of the 10 designers competing! Woohoo!

In addition, we are SO PROUD to say Maria Tapia placed 5th, Veronica Merino placed 6th, and Haroldine Neatherry placed 7th out of 10 competitors!

This week the Shirley's design team have been gearing up for one of our larger weddings this Summer. This wedding in particular is going all out with three of our arches, urns, tall glass cylinders, glass cubes, etc. Our rentals will be lavishly decorated with red and white florals that include hydrangeas, roses, chrysanthemums, bells of Ireland, white oriental lilies and even more.
